It’s Winnie the Pooh Day

Today (1/18) is Winnie-the-Pooh Day! Oh, the days of childhood and the era of make-believe. Do you recall being excited about sitting in front of your television to hang out with one of your special Pooh Bear friends created by A. A. Milne? What Pooh character did you most identify with...Piglet, Eeyore, Christopher Robin, Tigger, Roo, Rabbit, or Kanga? Did watching Winnie-the-Pooh entice you to read the Winnie-the-Pooh book series? Maybe you are a little younger than I am and you do not remember the joy of Winnie-the-Pooh. What children's story brings you joy as you think back on watching it on television or reading the book(s)?

Have you taken the time to bring stories to life in your classroom? How do you give your children the gift of bringing the book to life for themselves? Do you create learning centers that focus on the favorite stories of your children? Do you strategically place the stories that your children enjoy around the classroom? Do you allow children to read their favorite stories to their classmates? There are many opportunities to fall in love with a book. Wouldn't it be great to work with small groups on ideas centered on making Eeyore laugh and laugh and laugh some more? The bonus will be hearing the sound of laughter coming from deep within your children.

Your turn! In the comment section, share with us your favorite children's story and one way to incorporate that story with young children. In return for your comment, we will send you a coupon for one free class from Well Able Training Service.

My favorite story is 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. I have memorized it since my own early childhood experience and dramatically share it with the children(of all nationalities) in my care for the past fifteen years. Christmas time is joyous, heightened, full of cheer, happiness, love, festivities and giving. Most children identify with Christmas Eve to some extent as it is celebrated all over the world regardless of religious affiliation. We all get a chance to change the characters, words and settings to our individual preferences and according to our experiences and up bringing. Christmas around the world is represented in our centers including dramatic play, art/displays, reading, music and movement, meal time etc. for the entire month of Dec…

One of my favorite stories is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. During spring, our preschool class buys caterpillar eggs. We observe how the caterpillars turn into butterflies. We read the story and reenact the story by each child using story picture cards. We use butterfly wings in dramatic center and make butterflies with coffee filters in art. In blocks we build butterflies gardens and outside we look for butterflies and flowers butterflies would enjoy.
