Happy Juneteenth!

In all honesty, I have awaited this day for nearly 30 years. A day when I could say HAPPY JUNETEENTH and most people would not respond with a "HUH?". So, here goes! HAPPY JUNETEENTH! HAPPY JUNETEENTH! HAPPY JUNETEENTH! Now, I feel better.

I learned about Juneteenth while working on my first Master's Degree because this topic was NEVER discussed or taught to me before this time. Juneteenth and Reconstruction became a part of my life when I stumbled upon them while researching African-American history following the oppression of slavery in the United States of America. Since stumbling across this significant period of African-American history, I have dedicated my life to sharing this information with any child placed in my care.

Juneteenth provided freedom for me because I learned that I am responsible to learn all that I can about my history and the accomplishments of my people. Here is the key about Juneteenth (in my humble opinion), you will never be free until you know you are free. The slaves in Galveston Texas were legally free for 2-1/2 years before General Granger arrived to share the life-changing news with those in bondage.

As educators, it is our responsibility to share information with our children as we empower them to live free, to walk in integrity, and to make a difference in this world. Share with all children why Juneteenth is so significant. Explain to our children how African-Americans made significant changes in this country throughout Reconstruction. Most of all, strengthen your children (at home, school, church, etc.) to change this world by using their gifts and talents for good.

"Whatever we believe about ourselves and our ability comes true for us." Susan L. Taylor

Please feel free to share!
